I've been getting many questions lately regarding tinctures and how to use them. I realise this is a new thing for many people, as it was for me, but now that I know about them I'm so excited to tell you more about them.
A tincture is a concentrated liquid preservation of an herb or medicinal substance that preserves the herb for a long period of time and makes it easier to consume. Unlike a tea, which is boiled to extract the medicinal constituents, the herbs are cold-soaked over a period of time, allowing their potent elements to transfer into the liquid. Tinctures are one of the simplest natural remedies to make and are an in-expensive way to preserve herbs.
A glycerite or glycerin based tincture is a liquid herbal preparation that uses vegetable glycerin as the main method of extraction. Glycerin, or glycerol, is a thick, sweet-tasting liquid that’s clear in color. It's the natural result of breaking down oil or fat. Although sweet, it contains no sugar and no fat. Beyond taste, glycerin is stable when heated and is better for extraction and constituent preservation. It’s also great at extracting tannins, and it preserves the natural taste of the herb, which can be important for its therapeutic effect. Some research even suggests this substance can have an anti-oxidizing effect on the body. Glycerin tinctures are the go-to option for children due to its taste and safety advantage. They also provide a smart solution for those wanting to avoid alcohol for health or religious reasons.
It’s easily absorbed directly through mucus membranes and effects can be felt within 5–10 minutes. The outcome usually peaks within an hour and recedes in two to three hours. Tinctures, as compared to edibles (gummies and cookies) and oils, contain fewer calories. Tinctures allow you to easily monitor the number of drops that you are consuming. This allows you to find the therapeutic dosage (the dose that treats your condition) without waste. Though mostly taken orally, some can be used topically as well.
Convinced? Hope that tickled your excitement as it did ours!
